Famous people are human beings. They also want to date, hook up, find love, and/or just have fun. Grindr is a popular app for those who are gay and looking – and celebrities aren’t immune to giving it their best shot.
For a few reasons, it can be somewhat tricky for a celebrity to be on Grindr. There’s a chance that users will report you for potentially catfishing as a famous person. There are also guys who will hit you up on the app as fans, not as interested suitors. While this can lead certain celebrities to give up on Grindr and delete their accounts, there are also those who are still hopeful about their prospects on the gay dating app.
Scroll through to find out which gay celebrities have talked about being on Grindr.
Adam Rippon
“Yeah, I’ve dated on the internet,” Olympian Adam Rippon revealed in an interview with Vice. “Grindr is just trash. You’re not looking for love, you’re looking for a mistake.” The athlete then demonstrated how his torso-only profile picture used to look like on Grindr.
Andy Cohen
Andy Cohen has talked about being on the apps and using Grindr a few times. During an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Cohen joked about the issues that come with being famous and trying to use gay dating apps. The Watch What Happens Live host explained, “There is a gay dating app [Grindr] that I’m on that I keep getting kicked off of because they think I’m impersonating Andy Cohen.”
Billy Eichner
While promoting Bros, Billy Eichner told Variety that he had been kicked out of Tinder twice. The actor then added, “I’ll stick to Hinge and Grindr and everything else. I do not need another mug telling me it’s okay to be alone.”

Gus Kenworthy
Gus Kenworthy has shared a few social media posts about being on Grindr. During an interview with Vanity Fair, the Olympian also talked about how “Grindr crashed” at the Olympic Village during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Even though Kenworthy was “excited for that” experience in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, things were a bit chillier then. In 2019, the athlete also did a video for Grindr where he met the Old Gays.
Joel Kim Booster
Fire Island star Joel Kim Booster did a full “69 Questions” video for Grindr where he talked about using the gay dating app. When asked if people should admit that they know who he is while chatting on Grindr, Booster replied: “If you know who I am, you are legally required to tell me.” The actor also revealed that his current “tribe” on Grindr is “discreet.”
Katya
RuPaul’s Drag Race superstar Katya has also admitted to experimenting with Grindr during one of the earliest episodes of UNHhhh. “I’ve experimented with Grindr, [but] I never get laid on it.” Alas, Katya then went on to share a story about finding a Grindr date in Miami, Florida that turned out to be “wonderful.”
Lil Nas X
Lil Nas X really tried to have fun on Grindr, but things just didn’t work out for the rapper. “I can’t do Grindr anymore,” he told GQ during an interview. “I’d get murdered. I’d literally, probably get murdered.”
Luke Macfarlane
During an interview with Variety to promote his appearance on Bros, Luke Macfarlane revealed that he’s been on Grindr in the past. However, the actor called the hookup app “all very scary.”
Olly Alexander
During an interview with GQ, Olly Alexander talked about his usage of Grindr. “When I was newly single, I downloaded Grindr,” the Years & Years singer revealed. “I was on it, and then it was just weird because people would think I was catfishing myself, which was kind of a head f*ck. Or they’d be like, ‘Oh, I’m such a big fan.’ And that’s kind of a turnoff, so it didn’t go super well for me.”
Troye Sivan
Troye Sivan opened up to Pop Crush about using gay dating apps and experiencing a particularly awkward situation. “It was a while ago, back in a time when it was a little bit less accepted and a little bit more scary,” the singer noted. Upon meeting up with a guy for a date, Sivan was apparently not impressive enough, as his suitor pulled out his phone and started to scroll through Grindr right in front of him. “I was like, ‘Okay, I think I’m just gonna go home,” Sivan recalled.
