The 'Wicked' Movie Is Coming Sooner Than We Thought

Get ready to go to Oz!

Like a comet pulled from orbit as it passes the sun, Wicked Part I has been moved off of its original release date of December 25, 2024 to a month earlier, November 27, 2024.

The movie was originally slated to come out for Christmas, but the studio felt it would be better positioned around Thanksgiving instead.

Currently, there are no other movies scheduled to come out Thanksgiving 2024, just a placeholder date for an unnamed Disney animation project. Christmas of that year, on the other hand, has not only Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but Avatar 3, as well.

Wicked, a sort of prequal to The Wizard of Oz, is being directed by Jon M. Chu, and stars Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. It also stars Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Ethan Slater as Boq.

Chu commented on the release date change on Twitter.

“WICKED NEWS: We are deep into production on WICKED and everyday we get more and more excited to share with u the mischief we’ve been up to,” he tweeted. “So…We’ve decided to get it to you all a little earlier than planned. OUR NEW RELEASE Date is NOV 27th 2024! A little Thanksgiving treat!”

The movie has been split into two parts that are currently scheduled to come out one year after the other.

Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the music and lyrics to the original Broadway show, is also adapting the screenplay with Winnie Holzman. He is also expected to write at least two new songs for the movies.
