Florence + the Machine has covered No Doubt’s 1995 breakthrough hit “Just a Girl” for Season 2 of Yellowjackets. A snippet of the song teased by singer Florence Welch on social media this week has the whole hive buzzing.
On Monday, Welch posted a video to Florence + the Machine’s official Instagram that finds the singer riffling through a clothing rack of lacy, glittery dresses in muted pastel only to find a yellow and blue letterman jacket with “Yellowjackets” emblazoned across the back.
As fans of the creepy series know, Yellowjackets follows the story of a girls’ high school soccer team that must survive in the remote Canadian wilderness after a plane crash in the mid-90s. The show’s split timeline also follows the present-day survivors as they reckon with the Lord of the Flies-meets-Lost horrors they experienced.
The show’s official Instagram commented on Welch’s post, writing “We make one hell of a team.”
Yellowjacket, which returns March 24, became a surprise hit for Showtime, particularly among LGBTQ+ viewers, when its first season premiered last year. The show features several prominent queer characters, including Taissa (played as a teen by Jasmin Savoy Brown and as an adult by Tawyny Cypress) and Ben (Steven Krueger) the team’s assistant coach.
Welch is apparently a big fan of the show as well. Last May, she included Yellowjackets in a list of all the entertainment that fueled her band’s latest album, Dance Fever. “Yellowjackets appeals to me because of my fascination with all things culty, but also it portrays the violence of the hormonal shift of girlhood so well,” she told The New York Times. “I think there’s something about being a young woman that feels very murderous. That’s what I was trying to get with a song like ‘Dream Girl Evil.’ It can be dangerous for people to think you’re incredibly nice. When you get, ‘You’re an angel,’ that seems like such a high place to fall from. When I see messy or violent or terribly behaved women, especially young women, there’s a liberation. To not have to try and survive by being good.”
“Just a Girl” is the perfect song to get a creepy Florence + the Machine makeover for the show. As IndieWire notes, the song was originally released in 1995, the year prior to the plane crash in Yellowjackets, making it just the sort of thing the show’s potentially cannibalistic teen soccer stars might have listened to on their walkmans.
